BCM college, located in the heart of Kottayam was founded by Mar Thomas Tharayil, Bishop of Kottayam to fulfill the long cherished dream of his predecessor Mar Alexandar Chulaparambil to provide an institution for the higher education of women.
Since its inception, the college has made steady progress and is now the flagship educational institution of the diocese and one of the premier colleges affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The college offers quite a number of graduate, post graduate and vocational courses. MSW is one of the most recent initiatives in imparting professional training in the field of social work.
The college motto is sapientia et gratia i.e. wisdom and grace, two essential qualities required in any student. Believing that the true purpose of education is the over all development of personality, the college tries to promote spiritual, moral and intellectual growth along with personality development unique to every student.
Management
BCM College is managed by the diocese of Kottayam. The diocese has established its excellence in India and abroad through its dedicated service to humanity. In the field of education, the diocese serves the nation by running four colleges, two nursing schools, one technical school and 183 schools. Most Rev.Dr.Kuriakose Kunnachery is the patron of this college. Rev.Dr.Jacob Kollaparambil is the manager and Rev. Sr.Libia is the Principal.
The Department
The Department of Social Work has been inaugurated on September 17, 2002 with
a first batch of 20 students, which includes 5 male students.
The emblem which gives the motto of the department Yearn to Learn and Nurture stands for the deep desire for learning and the nurturing the department provides to the students as well as the nurturing the students provide for those they extend their services to.
Mission
The mission of the department of social work is to provide quality education
in social work and to take initiative to intervene through practice and research
consistent with the history, philosophy and values of social work profession.
The masters level course will prepare the students to understand the dynamic
factors that impede peoples optimum social functioning and to intervene
for nurturing full development of human potentials and participation in society.
The department of social work is committed to train skilled and effective
professional social work practitioners and community leaders in providing
high quality professional service to individuals, families, communities and
organizations. The department also envisages collaborating with other professional
and educational institutions for imparting the field practicum.
Purpose
The purpose of social work education is to prepare competent and effective social work professionals who are committed to the practice that includes services to the downtrodden, oppressed and the needy. Social work education is based upon a specific body of knowledge, values and professional skills. Therefore, the MSW course aims at the promotion, restoration, maintenance and enhancement of the social functioning of individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities by enabling them to accomplish tasks, prevent and alleviate distress.
